Why We Slow Down With Scripture
The Story
The backyard was alive with laughter.
Children ran freely across the grass, chasing one another in pure joy. The neighbor’s dog barked excitedly from behind the fence, eager to join the fun, tail wagging wildly. It was a scene full of movement — voices overlapping, feet pounding, and the happy commotion of play.
Inside the house, their mother placed the last plate on the table. Lunch was ready. She slid open the glass door and called to them.
“Kids, come on in! It’s time to eat!”
But with all the noise and excitement, her voice was swallowed by the chaos. The dog barked. The children shouted. No one heard her.
She raised her gentle voice again, a little louder this time.
“Come inside!”
Still nothing.
Not one child turned toward her.
So she stepped outside — leaving the quiet of the house and entering the noisy backyard. Taking a few steps down into the grass, she walked up to her children.
“Didn’t you hear me calling you?” she asked with a soft smile.
Only then did they stop. Only then did they notice her voice.
Hand in hand, she led them inside — away from the noise, into the peaceful stillness of the home. There, at the table she had prepared, the children sat, ate, talked, laughed, and simply enjoyed being with their mother.
It was intimate.
It was nourishing.
It was togetherness.
This picture reflects the heart of Scripture itself: Jesus calling us, “Come unto Me” (Matthew 11:28), the Father drawing His children into the quiet of “the secret place” (Psalm 91:1), and His Word nourishing us like daily bread (Luke 4:4).
The Parallel Truth
Like that mother, Abba Father has prepared a meal for His children — a spiritual table set with His Word, His presence, and His love.
He calls to us gently:
“Come, dine with Me.”
“Come, rest with Me.”
“Come, be filled.”
But life is noisy.
Schedules roar.
Responsibilities chase us.
Screens demand attention.
The world barks like the neighbor’s dog, loudly and endlessly.
Often, His voice is soft — not because He is distant, but because He speaks in stillness.
And when we don’t hear Him, He doesn’t stop calling.
He steps out — into our noise, into our distractions, into our busyness — and meets us where we are. He taps us on the shoulder, drawing our hearts back to Him.
Then He leads us inside.
Into the quiet.
Into the secret place.
Into fellowship.
There, in His presence, we find:
nourishment for the soul,
rest for the weary,
peace for the troubled mind,
joy for the heart,
and the warmth of simply being with our Father.
In His presence, we savor Him — not rushed, not hurried — but deeply, lovingly, relationally.
Abba calls.
His children come.
And in the secret place, our souls are satisfied.
